Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen has carved his name into the record books, becoming the first Nigerian to win the prestigious Sportsman of the Year award at the 2025 GQ Türkiye Men of the Year Awards.

The 26-year-old forward, who joined Galatasaray permanently in summer 2025 after a record €75 million transfer from Napoli, capped a transformative debut season with a league and cup double, 37 goals, and national adoration. His prolific form earned him the Super Lig golden boot and Turkish Cup top-scorer honors, cementing his place as Turkey’s most-searched athlete.

At the star-studded Istanbul gala, Osimhen joined an elite club as only the third footballer in a decade to win the award, following Wesley Sneijder (2016) and Mauro Icardi (2023). In his emotional acceptance speech, he dedicated the honor to his “Galatasaray family” and fans worldwide: “This means so much to me and my family. I appreciate everyone who has supported me. I will continue to do my best.” He closed with a roar for the Cimbom faithful: “Yaşasın Galatasaray!” — sparking thunderous applause.

Beyond his on-field exploits, Osimhen’s rise underscores his global impact. From winning African Footballer of the Year in 2023 to finishing top-10 in the Ballon d’Or, the Lagos-born striker has transcended sport, inspiring youth across Nigeria and beyond. Galatasaray coach Okan Buruk praised: “Victor isn’t just scoring; he’s shaping our identity.”

As Osimhen prepares to lead Nigeria at AFCON 2025 in Morocco (December 21–January 18, 2026), the GQ nod signals his ascent from Lagos streets to global icon. For Turkish football, it validates the €75m gamble; for Nigeria, it’s proof that homegrown talent can conquer Europe.
